USMNT’s Pulisic Optimistic After First Half Exit Against Paraguay

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Star player Christian Pulisic is feeling hopeful after being substituted at halftime during the U.S. men’s national team’s 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their World Cup opener.

“I just got kicked a little bit in the first half, so I hope nothing happens,” Pulisic mentioned, adding that the team is taking precautions. “We’re hoping that things will be okay over the next few days.”

Pulisic explained that the kick was to the back of his left calf.

Lucky for him, there was no downside to playing it safe, especially since coach Mauricio Pochettino chose to replace him with Sebastian Berhalter while the U.S. led 3-0 at halftime.

The Americans have a full week to prepare for their next match against Australia in Seattle, which gives Pulisic ample time to recover—at least, ideally.

During the first half, Pulisic was a standout player. He played confidently, effectively one-on-one against defenders, and was instrumental in the U.S. scoring its first goal. He also assisted Folarin Balogun for the second.

“I wouldn’t say I’m shocked,” he reflected. “You’ve seen us play like this lately. The guys were motivated. We allowed them to make plays and did what we had to do with the ball, leading to goals. Today, we just had to work hard, and it all came together.”

Recently, the USMNT shared a video capturing a phone call from President Trump who reached out to show his support for the team.

A brief clip posted on the men’s national team’s account shows World Cup representative Andrew Giuliani receiving the call from Trump. He was seen speaking with manager Mauricio Pochettino and captain Tim Ream, who were both present, though Giuliani assured that all 26 players were there before handing the phone to Pochettino.

“I wanted to say you’re a fantastic guy and a great coach,” Trump said, visibly pleased while complimenting Pochettino. “I recognize your success and how exceptional your players are. I believe you have a strong chance to go all the way, so good luck!”

Pochettino, expressing his gratitude, replied, “Mr. President, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. We’ll do everything we can to make you and everyone in this country proud.”
