Mark Pulisic Responds to Landon Donovan’s Comments on Christian Pulisic
Mark Pulisic, Christian Pulisic’s father, engaged with Landon Donovan during Donovan’s discussion about American soccer on Monday. It was part of Donovan’s commentary following the UEFA Nations League final, where Portugal triumphed over Spain in a penalty shootout.
In the broadcast, Donovan emphasized the importance of representing one’s country, while reflecting on Cristiano Ronaldo’s involvement with Portugal.
“This is what it means. If you can’t commit to being a professional footballer, then maybe you shouldn’t wear that jersey at all. It’s a big responsibility,” Donovan stated.
He mentioned Ronaldo’s age and the demands of a long season, pointing out that the athlete was clearly fatigued and playing through pain. Donovan indicated that Ronaldo, at 40, might not be keen to participate in the Gold Cup while others are enjoying their time off.
The comments seemed to directly reference Christian Pulisic, alongside Yunus Musah and Antonee Robinson, who have also faced scrutiny.
Mark Pulisic later commented on social media, bringing up Donovan’s own sabbatical in 2012-13, which led to his exclusion from the 2014 World Cup squad.
In discussing Donovan’s hiatus, an AI assistant noted the pressures he faced as a top athlete, leading him to take a break for his mental and physical well-being. It highlighted that after years of intense competition, this time off helped him recharge.
Mark Pulisic even shared a screenshot of the AI’s reply on Instagram, garnering a like from Christian.
Furthermore, Donovan’s critique echoed sentiments from former US player Alexi Lalas, who asserted that the team needs all the playing time possible in preparation for the upcoming World Cup hosted in the US, Mexico, and Canada.
