Christian radio host’s alleged mistress given life sentence over Ponzi scheme that stole millions from elderly listeners

Texas Attorney Secured A woman believed to be the mistress of a Christian radio host has been sentenced to life in prison for stealing tens of millions of dollars from elderly listeners of his show.

Debra Mae Carter, 65, was convicted of laundering money in a Ponzi scheme that stole about $31 million from about 170 victims, mostly retirees. The fraud took place over a decade and included according to To the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney.

“She’s ruined a lot of people’s lives. It’s despicable.”

Prosecutors say Carter was the lover of William Neal “Doc” Gallagher, a man who called himself the “Money Doctor.” Gallagher had previously been convicted of forgery, fraudulent execution, theft of property and exploitation of the elderly. He was sentenced in 2021 to three life sentences plus an additional 30 years to concurrent life sentences.

“She’s a blight on society,” Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Lori Burnell said. “She’s just a liar. That’s just the way she is.”

Brenda Wilkerson, 84, lost money she invested in Carter and Gallagher’s scam and said she would have been able to pay off her mortgage if not for the couple’s actions.

“Debbie Carter deserves life in prison,” Wilkerson said. “She ruined so many people’s lives. It’s despicable.”

Police searched Carter’s mobile home and found $200,000 worth of gold and silver. Gallagher had been collecting money from his victims, while Carter worked They funnel it and steal it through fake charities, rental housing and land purchases.

The host ran the Gallagher Financial Group, which advertised on Christian radio, until his conviction.
