Belmont University Addresses Compliance Concerns Amid Allegations

Belmont University in Tennessee has pushed back against claims that it is altering its initiatives related to federal immigration orders under President Donald Trump. In a statement, the university affirmed its adherence to federal laws.

However, a recent email from the university’s presidential office informs faculty and staff that Belmont will be partnering with “external partners” to ensure compliance with these orders. This move follows concerns about how the school reportedly handles information regarding illegal immigration and whether it distorts such details to outside parties.

The communication stressed that Belmont is taking these concerns seriously and is committed to being compliant with state and federal immigration laws.

Republican Representative Andy Ogles has been vocal about this issue, claiming that campus whistleblowers have come forward with troubling information. He recently raised alarms based on undercover footage he obtained, which suggests that staff in Belmont’s “Student Success Division and Prosperity” program are discussing ways to reframe their messaging to align with the current federal directives.

“The hub is hope, unity, belonging. It’s Day. Let’s be authentic,” said Joseph Rookie, an assistant director at Belmont, in the recorded discussion about ongoing efforts to support students. He mentioned the need to adapt their language while maintaining their progress.

In another revealing moment, Rookie acknowledged that Belmont has registered information about illegal immigration but is not forthcoming with external parties about it, a claim that has come under scrutiny from Ogles.

Ogles, who has a personal connection to the university—his daughter was accepted there—expressed both pride in local educational institutions and a desire for accountability. “There are amazing institutions, including Belmont. I want to praise them, but I have to hold them accountable too,” he stated in a recent video update.

He compared Belmont to prestigious schools like Harvard, saying that it cannot ignore compliance with the law. The representative also received documents indicating that if professors wish to modify courses or introduce new ones, they must complete a specific protocol.

Moreover, Ogles shared details from a document that seems to require the faculty search committee to consider diversity in race and gender, pushing for the recruitment of candidates from underrepresented groups. The documents he received also revealed ongoing DEI initiatives at Belmont, despite the federal government’s stance on such programs.

In light of this situation, Ogles’s office is planning to launch a new webpage aimed at gathering more whistleblower tips, which would provide an avenue for individuals to relay insider information about the university’s handling of these issues.

Belmont officials have pointed back to the email sent to staff, outlining their anticipated efforts to ensure compliance. Yet, skepticism persists regarding the university’s true adherence to the law.
