Christian Wilkins Released from Raiders Following Controversial Incident

Veteran defensive lineman Christian Wilkins, previously with the Las Vegas Raiders, was released on Thursday, which came after a peculiar incident involving his teammate. Reports indicate that Wilkins kissed a fellow player on the forehead, a gesture that was interpreted differently by those involved.

Adam Schefter from ESPN provided additional details about the situation, mentioning that the kiss played a part in Wilkins’ departure from the team. It seems the incident occurred in the team’s meeting room last week, although, perhaps unexpectedly, the affected teammate did not see the encounter as playful as some may have thought.

Following the incident, a complaint was lodged with the Raiders’ Human Resources Department. This added to the complexities surrounding Wilkins’ release, especially since he had also been dealing with a broken Jones in his left foot sustained in October 2024.

The Raiders decided to void the remaining $35.2 million on Wilkins’ contract, stemming from how they managed his post-injury rehabilitation. He was released with a vested veteran designation, marking an unusual turn of events. In response to this action, Wilkins requested the NFL Players Association to intervene on his behalf, as the team aimed to strip him of guaranteed money.

Wilkins had joined the Raiders with a substantial four-year, $110 million contract last year, which included guarantees that made him a notable figure in free agency. Before his injury, he had showcased his talents, being recognized as one of the top defensive tackles during his tenure with the Miami Dolphins, where he amassed 355 combined tackles over 81 games.

In the five games prior to his injury in 2024 with the Raiders, Wilkins recorded two sacks and 17 combined tackles. The injury required surgery for a Jones fracture, ultimately cutting short his debut season with the team.
