Christian Wilkins faces challenges in free agency after difficult split with the Raiders

Christian Wilkins on the Market After Raiders’ Release

Christian Wilkins, a noted defensive tackle, finds himself available in the open market, yet the team seems a bit hesitant about moving forward with him.

Wilkins was unexpectedly cut by the Raiders on Thursday. Reports suggest that his release stemmed from concerns about how the team managed his rehabilitation from a leg injury that sidelined him for a significant portion of the last season.

Interestingly, Las Vegas only secured him for one season of a five-year, $110 million deal.

One source quoted a head coach saying, “He’s not as healthy as when he played for the Raiders.” Perhaps that hints at underlying issues. The coach added that something seems off about the situation.

Additionally, it was reported that Wilkins is set to meet with potential suitors to explore his options further.

The Raiders released him without the vested veteran designation, which leaves $35.2 million still attached to his contract.

A statement from the Raiders indicated, “We believe that parting ways with Christian Wilkins is in the best interest of the organization, and he has been notified of his release.”

They went on to emphasize their commitment to excellence, mentioning that with no clear path for Wilkins’s return, making this move is crucial for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Wilkins previously spent five seasons with the Dolphins before signing that lucrative contract with the Raiders prior to the 2024 season.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there was a disagreement between Wilkins and the Raiders regarding whether he should undergo surgery, which contributed to the tension after he sought various opinions.

Originally from Framingham, Massachusetts, Wilkins made a name for himself in college football at Clemson. In 2023, he recorded 22 1/2 career sacks, including nine, before inking his substantial deal with Las Vegas. Unfortunately, he only participated in five games last season, amassing 11 solo tackles, six quarterback hits, and two sacks.
