Chuck DeVore Discusses GOP Redistricting: Red States 'Far Less Gerrymandered' than Blue States Such as California and New York

According to Chuck DeBoer from the Texas Public Policy Foundation, even with the redistricting efforts by Republicans, red states tend to be “less gerrymandered” than blue states such as California, as he shared during an appearance on Breitbart News Daily.

DeBoer reminisced about the Texas redistricting process, reminding everyone that the New York Democratic Party initiated this battle “with redistricting in 2024.”

“I should clarify something. It seems like people often overlook that it was New York that kicked things off. Also, it’s worth noting that Democrats have historically been more ruthless and effective when it comes to gerrymandering.” He mentioned how he sometimes refers to it as “underling” because it derives from Elbridge Gerry, who oversaw the first gerrymander back in 1812 while he was governor of Massachusetts. He was later rewarded with the vice presidency, making it, as he put it, a “long-standing tradition.”

“But let’s talk about California. So, New York started things in 2024. The redistricting map in California wasn’t very fair either. Even after California established a so-called independent redistricting commission, Democrats figured out how to manipulate that by setting up these synthetic groups. They created what we call composite groups. These groups can be influential, but it doesn’t mean that the independent commission should be swayed by them. This is another area where Democrats found a way to secure most of the key roles within that so-called independent commission,” he explained.

Essentially, the Democratic Party built its own “synthetic interest community” because they believed they needed their own districts.

“Ultimately, California’s districts were more aggressively partisan and effective earlier this year compared to those in Texas after its own redistricting,” DeBoer contended.

“In effect, Texas navigated through these strict regulations and ended up gaining four or five seats. If you analyze the partisan breakdown, and look at how many votes went to Democrats versus Republicans, and then how many congressional seats Texas achieved from that, you’ll see that Texas’s districts were less aggressive than the previous ones in California. Under Gavin Newsom, they responded by saying, ‘Alright, you want to play? Let’s kick it into overdrive,'” he remarked.

Asked about the redistricting maneuvers in Florida, DeBoer emphasized the necessity for Republicans to act decisively, citing concerns about Democrats increasing their power in the House.

“Under Governor DeSantis and Republican leadership, Florida has transitioned from a purple state to firmly red. If Democrats regain control of the House, they will likely concoct baseless impeachment charges against President Trump and thwart the essential reforms he is advocating,” DeBoer highlighted.

“From my viewpoint as an American who hopes for the longevity of this republic, I feel this is crucial for the nation, and we’re committed to doing everything we can.” he said.

“Given that, even with efforts in Texas and elsewhere, Republican districts are less gerrymandered than those in California, Massachusetts, or Virginia, I think I’d say, ‘Good luck,'” he added.
