Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has argued that enthusiasm among Democrats for Vice President Kamala Harris to replace President Joe Biden as the party’s top candidate is “palpable,” even though initial polls suggest fewer than half think Harris should run to replace Biden.
Biden remained stubborn for weeks after his poor performance in a debate with former President Donald Trump, refusing to drop out of the race despite pleas from Democrats. sent letter “I wouldn’t be running again if I didn’t believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024,” he told Democrats.

“Democratic voters voted. They chose me as their party’s nominee. Are we now saying that the process didn’t matter? That voters had no say? I say no,” Biden wrote.
But despite Biden’s comments, it appears voters ultimately didn’t have a say, as congressional leaders chose to step in. Schumer has reportedly met with Biden and spoken openly about his feelings, and his office Since issued Not Denying rejection He called on Biden to drop out of the race.
In an interview with Punchbowl News, Schumer said: Said“My caucus had very strong feelings, and I wasn’t at all sure that President Biden was hearing those feelings, so I wanted to convey them to him myself.”
And now Schumer is beside himself with excitement for Harris, assuring the media that his enthusiasm is “palpable.” Punchbowl News reported that Schumer was “almost elated” when speaking about the forced personnel changes that would see Harris take over.
“You could cut with a knife the enthusiasm that Democrats have for winning the presidency, taking back the House and keeping the Senate. It’s palpable,” Schumer said. “It’s just astounding. Everywhere I go, everyone I talk to, it’s like night and day difference.”
Schumer is now making an even bolder prediction, telling Punchbowl that he thinks they’ll “hold the Senate and maybe pick up a seat or two.”

Schumer’s enthusiasm was on full display last week after he and his colleagues voiced their support for Harris in an awkward press conference that failed to elicit any visible or audible enthusiasm from others. In that press conference, Schumer bizarrely claimed the process unfolded “from the grassroots down,” even though not a single voter cast a ballot for Harris, the top Democratic candidate.
“We’re here today to support Vice President Kamala Harris,” Schumer declared enthusiastically, clapping his hands. When no one else clapped, Schumer added, “I’m clapping. You don’t have to.”

“Vice President Harris has secured a majority of the delegates. Today, in Wisconsin and across America, we begin a new chapter, and it will be our greatest chapter yet. Vice President Harris will defeat Donald Trump and become the next president of the United States of America,” Schumer continued, wagging his finger and asking, “Any applause?”
When no one applauded, Schumer simply smiled and moved on.

Schumer’s enthusiasm comes after a July 21 poll found that only 37% of respondents said Harris should replace Biden as the Democratic nominee. Another 35% said “someone else,” and more than a quarter, 27%, said they “don’t know.” This is consistent with an Economist/YouGov poll in which a majority of U.S. adults said Harris is “less likely to win the presidential election” than Biden.
