Schumer Criticizes Trump’s New Ballroom Plans
On Thursday, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) aimed to label President Donald Trump as hypocritical, although his statements fizzled out quickly.
At a press conference regarding the President’s trade contract deadline, a reporter disclosed, “The White House has just revealed plans for a $200 million ballroom set to begin construction this September.” Schumer seized upon this, questioning, “Where did this money come from? Was there any Congressional approval? I doubt it.”
While Schumer seemed to miss crucial context about the ballroom project—which he called “confounding”—he quickly jumped to conclusions.
He expressed, “This is just wasteful spending. It appears that cuts to services are in place to make way for this ballroom, which seems more about Trump enjoying his luxuries than about the American people.” Schumer emphasized that this initiative seemed designed for Trump’s personal comfort.
However, contrary to Schumer’s assertions that the ballroom detracts from public funds, the White House contends that it’s more of an enhancement for the American public.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt remarked, “For 150 years, presidents and their administrations have long sought a large space in the White House for hosting events. This new ballroom aims to address that need.” Leavitt noted that this project reflects Trump’s commitment, especially for future administrations.
She added that an additional 90,000 square feet is being designed by McClary Architects, a firm with a history in civic and institutional projects, to accommodate up to 650 guests—far exceeding the current 200-person limit of the White House’s East Room.
Trump mentioned in an NBC interview that he views this ballroom as a “gift for his country.”
White House Chief Susie Wills praised Trump, stating he has a keen eye for detail and an eagerness to preserve the White House’s heritage while enhancing it. “He is committed to creating a beautiful ballroom for future generations,” Wills said.
In a confident tone, Trump remarked, “I’ve always been a great real estate developer, and I know how to do that.”
