‘Citizens Cannot Be Trusted’: Jonathan Turley Compares Raskin Proposal To ‘Big Gulp’ Ban

Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, wrote in a blog post Tuesday about Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin’s efforts to disqualify former President Donald Trump from voting and banning Big Gulps. He compared then-New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s efforts to do so.

On Monday, Raskin told CNN host Dana Bash that Eric Eric of California is seeking to reinstate a bill that would label Trump an insurrectionist and disqualify him from running for president under the 14th Amendment. – He said he is working with Congressman Swalwell and Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida. The court overturned a Colorado Supreme Court ruling that barred him from voting. Turley compared Raskin’s efforts to reinstate the law to Bloomberg’s 2012 effort to ban the sale of soda larger than 16 ounces in multiple locations. “For these members, the public cannot trust this authority because Mr. Trump is leading the national polls as the presidential candidate,” Turley wrote in the article. blog. “This is a political version of the Big Gulp Act, where voters like consumers must be protected from their own unhealthy choices.”

Bloomberg has banned struck down A 2013 court decision ruled that the Board of Health did not have the authority to enforce the measure. The New York State Court of Appeals upheld the lower court’s 2014 decision.

Turley said Raskin’s bill would target not just Trump but other Republicans as well.

“Mr. Raskin’s participation in this effort is deeply ironic. In 2016, he sought to block the certification of the 2016 election under the same law in the wake of violent protests before Inauguration Day. I did,” Turley wrote in the post. “The previous bill was far-reaching and included members who were not involved in acts of violence (no members were charged with such violence or incitement) and who simply opposed certification. ”

“Ruskin has succeeded in one respect: he and his colleagues bulldozed every moral high ground after January 6,” Turley wrote. “Most of us condemned the riots that day as an affront to the constitutional process. But Democrats responded with the most anti-democratic efforts to prevent voters from exercising their rights in the next election.” did.”
