Raul Claros Plans Mobile Home Living to Address Issues in MacArthur Park

Raul Claros, a candidate for the Los Angeles City Council, shared on Tuesday his intention to live and work out of a mobile home near MacArthur Park if he is elected. Claros expressed a sense of urgency, stating, “We need to do something without thinking.” He described the area as a “disaster zone” grappling with multiple crises.

At 45, Claros is attempting to unseat District 1 City Councilwoman Eunice Hernandez. He told reporters his plan is to remain in the mobile home until significant improvements are made regarding crime, homelessness, and drug-related issues in the city.

Interestingly, he acknowledged that his move might also serve as a publicity stunt aimed at raising awareness about the ongoing challenges in the area. “We definitely want to get noticed,” he admitted, indicating a desire for attention from city departments and resources.

A representative for Hernandez, Naomi Villagomez Ruchnik, dismissed Claros’ intentions, asserting that their office aims to produce tangible results rather than exploit low-income neighborhoods for marketing purposes.

Claros responded to Ruchnik’s statement directly, asserting that Hernandez has not effectively tackled the homelessness crisis. He underscored recent violent incidents in the neighborhood, including two murders last year.

“Councilman Hernandez’s office is in disarray,” he claimed, arguing that decisions made by the City Council have hindered her objectives. He expected the competition from other candidates would ultimately lead to her losing her position.

MacArthur Park has seen turmoil recently, with federal agencies, including the National Guard, conducting immigration raids in the vicinity. Local federal authorities have raised concerns regarding the possible presence of MS-13 gangs in the area.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized federal law enforcement’s tactics, stating they endangered children who were present in the park. “What happened to the criminals, the drug dealers, the violent people?” she questioned, expressing concern about the impact on children’s summer activities.
