Cleveland Clinic Ends Child Gender Transition Services and Pledges Support for Detransition Care

Cleveland Clinic Reaches Settlement with Justice Department

The Department of Justice announced on June 5 that the Cleveland Clinic has agreed to provide transitional care and refrain from performing sex-denial procedures on minors.

This decision is part of ongoing efforts over the years to avoid offering sex-denial treatment to young people, as highlighted in a press release from the Justice Department. In addition, Cleveland Clinic has committed to paying $2 million for recovery care for those transitioning, without regard to their insurance status or ability to pay.

Deputy Attorney General Stanley Woodward emphasized the department’s dedication to protecting children in a statement. He noted that this agreement, alongside one made with Texas Children’s Hospital, reinforces the message to healthcare providers about the importance of adhering to federal law when it comes to the well-being of children.

Interestingly, the term “sex denial treatment” doesn’t encompass talk therapy, counseling, or any other forms of non-medical psychiatric intervention. This distinction is outlined in the settlement agreement.

The Justice Department had not provided immediate comments to inquiries from news organizations.

A spokesperson for the Cleveland Clinic expressed their satisfaction in addressing what they described as an unintentional coding issue affecting a small number of patients, highlighting their commitment to providing exceptional care while complying with all applicable laws.

Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate acknowledged the cooperation of institutions like Cleveland Clinic and Texas Children’s Hospital, stating that Cleveland Clinic’s financial commitment to care for detransitioners is an important step forward.

While this resolution is welcome, Shumate noted that the department’s work isn’t over, pledging continued efforts to safeguard children and hold accountable those exploiting them, including both pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers.

This settlement follows a prior announcement on May 15 concerning Texas Children’s Hospital, which reached an agreement to cease similar procedures involving minors.

Importantly, the agreement does not imply any admission of guilt or liability under federal civil law by the Cleveland Clinic or its affiliates. Additionally, it does not waive any potential defenses in future legal scenarios.

Notably, the Cleveland Clinic had removed information from its website related to gender ideology and equity initiatives after an investigation pointed out its progressive policies.
