‘Climate Reality Check’ measures accurate representation of climate change in movies, TV shows

new research is calling on the entertainment industry to do a proper “reality check” and acknowledge that “climate change is our reality.”

“It’s something that’s happening here and now, not somewhere else or in the future. It affects every aspect of life. But that reality is still largely absent from the stories on our screens.” ” says the study. “Climate Reality Check is a simple tool to assess whether our climate reality is represented in movies, TV shows, and other stories. I take inspiration from testing.”

The Bechdel-Wallace Test refers to an idea popularized by cartoonist Alison Bechdel in 1985 that states that if a film features at least two female characters whose conversations do not involve men, then the film Claims to be an accurate depiction.

Similarly, a “climate reality check” requires that a movie or show acknowledge the existence of climate change and that at least one character knows about it. This can be done by mentioning “unprecedented” weather events or characters using the term “climate change” in conversation.

As an example, this study watched 13 Oscar-nominated movies and found that 23%, or 3 movies, passed the test. The movies were “Barbie,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1,” and “Nyad.”

In “Barbie,” Sasha, played by Ariana Greenblatt, tells Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, “You’re taking the feminist movement back 50 years, destroying girls’ innate values, and destroying the planet.” climate change has been hinted at. It celebrates rampant consumerism. ”

In “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1,” the United States develops AI cyberweapons to prepare for the possibility of “ballistic warfare over rapidly shrinking ecosystems.”

“Nyad” specifically cites “global warming” as the reason for changes in the ecosystem.

“Climate Reality Check does not suggest or require that all stories center around climate change, nor does it prescribe what kind of stories filmmakers should tell. It simply “We simply measure whether the current climate reality is reflected on screen. How that is done, friends, is up to you,” the study says.

The study’s conclusions were reached after the authors spoke with more than 200 screenwriters, showrunners, executives, communications experts, and others. The authors hoped that by 2027, 50% of Oscar-nominated films would pass a “climate reality check.”

“As we are all affected by and emotionally reacting to climate change, so are the characters in our favorite stories,” the study says.

The study was published by Good Energy, an organization dedicated to accurately portraying climate change in the media, and Colby College’s Buck Institute for Climate and Environment. Fox News Digital has reached out to both organizations for comment.
