Clint Dempsey discusses the 2026 World Cup US men's soccer team and what it means to represent the country.

2026 FIFA World Cup: USMNT’s Journey at Home

Every player involved in the 2026 FIFA World Cup is gearing up for an intense battle on the world’s premier soccer stage. For the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), the stakes are particularly high since the tournament is taking place right here at home this summer.

The 26 players named to the official roster are acutely aware of the weight of this moment. Fans across the country are primed to rally behind the team, creating a once-in-a-lifetime atmosphere for the players. Clint Dempsey, who has played in three World Cups for the USMNT, has faith that this current squad can achieve what he once did.

“You know, I’ve already broken my nose before, so that gives you an idea of what we sacrifice to represent our country. The honor of doing so is immense,” Dempsey shared, referencing his work with the Abbott Dream Team, a collaboration between health coach Abbott and soccer club Real Madrid.

During the 2014 World Cup, Dempsey faced a painful moment when he took a punch to the face, leaving him bloodied. Despite the injury, he pressed on, embodying the spirit of resilience with his significant role in the team’s early match that year. He netted a goal just 34 seconds into their game against Ghana, although he accidently struck himself in the process. He stayed on the field, refusing to back down.

Dempsey has undergone two heart surgeries for arrhythmia, which has been quite a journey. Even after the disappointment of the U.S. not qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, he was determined to don the jersey again, cherishing the chance to represent his nation.

“I dreamed as a kid of playing in the World Cup for my country,” he reminisced, emphasizing that even after three appearances, it never loses its magic.

For some athletes like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams, this will be their second World Cup experience. Younger players such as Ricardo Pepi, Alex Zendejas, and Sebastian Berhalter will also have their dreams realized when they take to the field against Paraguay on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The presence of home fans is more than just a comfort; it’s a tactical advantage. Dempsey believes this team is ready to leverage that support, aiming to write their names in the history books.

There was some surprise as Diego Luna, who featured in a promotional ad for Nike’s World Cup campaign, was left off the USMNT roster.

While the World Cup encapsulates the pure love of soccer, it also stands as a testament to national pride. Dempsey’s passion for representing the U.S. is evident. He recalled a recent podcast conversation with fellow soccer icons Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, where they pondered which jersey they’d want to be buried in. For Dempsey, it would always be the U.S. jersey.

“It’s a huge honor to represent my country,” he remarked.

Dempsey is continuing to support the Abbott Dream Team this year, which provides young players in the U.S. a unique opportunity to develop their skills at Real Madrid. Participants will engage with professional coaches, watch matches at the iconic Bernabéu Stadium, and gain insights into sports health and nutrition.

Touching on his mentorship role, Dempsey noted, “It’s about giving kids a chance to chase their dreams. I want to set the best example for my own children too.” The opportunity to try out for Real Madrid coaches can inspire these young players, he believes.

Excitingly, Real Madrid legend Marcelo will also mentor this year’s Abbott Dream Team. Recent tryouts in Miami, Washington, D.C., and Houston saw Dempsey in attendance, with more tryouts lined up in Kansas City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

While the World Cup is on the horizon, the journey towards it is already sparking excitement and ambition, especially for the USMNT who are ready to make their mark on soccer’s biggest stage.
