Clint Dempsey Discusses USMNT’s World Cup Roster
Clint Dempsey, a veteran of three World Cups, recalls times when there were uncertainties about the U.S. national team’s lineup before each tournament. This year is no exception, as the official roster for the 2026 USMNT was revealed in Manhattan on Tuesday.
This roster announcement not only confirmed prior speculations regarding the team’s makeup but also reflects the first World Cup squad under coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has already begun to shield his selections from external critique.
Dempsey recently shared his insights, noting his role as a mentor with the Abbott Dream Team program—a collaboration between health coach Abbott and soccer powerhouse Real Madrid. He expressed surprise over certain roster choices, stating, “There are definitely some surprises. We seem to have a defensive-minded squad, especially at the right-back position.” He emphasized that though he didn’t choose the team, he believes they can perform well, relying on key players like Chris Richards, Anthony Robinson, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and Christian Pulisic.
He also pointed out other players, such as Diego Luna and Tanner Tessman, who were surprisingly excluded from the roster, admitting it was a tough pill to swallow. Yet, he acknowledges the contributions of first-time World Cup players, highlighting Alex Zendejas’s performances for Club America and Gio Reyna’s effectiveness with the national team.
With the FIFA deadline looming on June 1, changes to the squad are rare. Pochettino appears committed to this 26-man lineup as they prepare to represent the country on home soil during the World Cup.
Dempsey reminisced about his childhood dreams of wearing the American flag on his jersey at the World Cup—a dream he’s lived many times over. As the team gears up for their Group D opener against Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles, he emphasizes the importance of a strong start supported by fans.
“It’s crucial to connect with the fan base, much like the men’s and women’s hockey teams did during the Winter Olympics. That connection can create a support system,” he remarked.
Support for Young Talents
Dempsey is backing the Abbott Dream Team for a second consecutive year, a unique initiative encouraging young soccer players across the U.S. to gain invaluable experience at Real Madrid. Participants will get to train with coaches, attend matches at the legendary Bernabéu Stadium, and receive guidance on sports health and nutrition from experts.
Regarding his involvement, Dempsey stated, “It’s gratifying to help kids follow their dreams. I have my own children and want to give them every opportunity to succeed. This program opens doors for young talents, letting them showcase their skills.”
Alongside Dempsey, Real Madrid great Marcelo will serve as a mentor for this year’s program. Tryouts have taken place in several cities, including Miami and Washington, D.C., with more scheduled soon.
“I’m proud of these players for stepping up and taking a chance,” he added, reflecting on the program’s impact.
