CNN host Jake Tapper suggested Sunday that sales from former President Trump’s new sneakers could help pay for mounting legal costs.
Trump was ordered Friday to pay $355 million in fines and interest in a New York civil fraud case, and last month a jury ordered him to pay $83.3 million for defaming author E. Jean Carroll. . Mr. Tapper suggested Mr. Trump could raise legal fees by selling $400 sneakers that the former president unveiled Saturday at a Sneaker Con event in Philadelphia.
“Here’s one possibility. He’s currently selling $400 gold-branded shoes. He’s there. He probably went to a sneaker convention that was in Philadelphia, right? …Is he trying to collect legal fees or [if] This is just a branding opportunity,” Tapper said on a panel discussing how Trump would pay for his legal fees.
“But he makes a lot of money on branding. I think someone bought an autographed pair there last night for a few thousand dollars,” he added.
President Trump debuted a line of tennis shoes called Trump Sneakers during his speech at Sneaker Con on Saturday, which includes two different pairs of shoes. A pair of gold-colored high-tops with the letter “T” on the side panel starts at $399, and another pair of his is priced at $199 and comes in two colors. According to the website.
“This is something I’ve been talking about for 12, 13 years,” Trump said Saturday. “And I think it’s going to be a huge success. Your influence has been very positive. They’ve really had an impact and they love it and they love what we’ve done. I am.”
The website notes that none of the items on the list, including perfume and cologne, are affiliated with the former president’s presidential campaign or the Trump Organization. The website states that Trump’s name, image and likeness are licensed to CIC Ventures LLC.
