Guaranteed Income Mayors Coalition Criticizes Federal Aid Cuts
The Guaranteed Income Mayors Coalition has voiced strong opposition to the reduction of federal aid programs in a statement released on Tuesday.
Michael D. Tubbs, the founder of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, mentioned, “As significant federal aid programs are being phased out, state leaders are creating opportunities and enhancing financial security for their residents.”
In an interesting turn, President Donald Trump is working to cut federal programs and is even looking to dismantle the Department of Education. Just this January, it was reported that over $10 billion in federal child care and social services funding for five Democratic-led states was frozen due to concerns regarding the misallocation of taxpayer dollars towards non-citizens.

The coalition asserts that state leaders are stepping up to assist Americans who are struggling as the “price crisis” continues to escalate. They argue that guaranteed income programs are a means of strengthening residents’ economic security.
According to Tubbs, “Data from nearly 30 city- and county-led pilots shows that these policies can really help families cover their essential needs, build up savings for unexpected situations, pursue better job opportunities, and alleviate stress.” He further explained, “This approach could really uplift families as they navigate an affordability crisis that is tightening household budgets.”
Across the country, guaranteed basic income programs have surged in popularity, with more than 100 pilot programs launched since 2018. The coalition has now expanded to include 150 mayors advocating for pilot programs that would provide low-income participants with up to $1,000 per month, no strings attached. They plan to promote these initiatives across various local governments.
A key example is Cook County, Illinois, which has recently established a permanent basic income guarantee program after the success of an earlier pilot. This initiative was initiated in 2022, leaning on federal COVID-19 relief funds.

The Guaranteed Income Policy’s recent news release highlights that unconditional cash payments are being tested in numerous cities and counties nationwide. The initiative aims to provide regular monetary support to those in need.
Moreover, evidence suggests that a related group, the Group of Income Security Legislators, has reported over 20 bills aimed at forming statewide income security programs across 11 states. Additionally, more than 60 bills proposing cash-based policies akin to guaranteed income have been introduced in 15 states.
Federal Funding Cuts Over Non-Citizen Concerns Reported
The coalition is committed to fostering economic stability through these guaranteed income efforts, emphasizing the necessity for families to survive in today’s challenging financial landscape.
In a statement, Tubbs said, “The evidence we have illustrates the positive impact guaranteed income policies can make, allowing families to prioritize their essential needs while contributing to a more resilient economy.” Tubbs, who also established the Guaranteed Income Counties and the Guaranteed Income Caucus, previously served as the mayor of Stockton, California from 2017 to 2021.
