Coast Guard affected by DHS shutdown due to border conflict

Republican lawmakers overseeing the Coast Guard are expressing concerns that the Democrats’ decision to withhold funding from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is unjustly harming the only military service not under the Pentagon’s command. According to CBS News, Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is advocating for “three fundamental goals” to be revisited. These goals involve limiting the authority of ICE officers in specific locations, mandating body cameras for officers interacting with the public, and addressing issues related to the use of force.

Despite the ongoing funding for ICE and other immigration agencies through various financial measures, many Republicans argue that FEMA, the Merchant Marines, the Coast Guard, and other agencies are left without adequate resources. Representative Mark Begich (R-Alaska), who is part of the House Transportation Subcommittee focused on maritime and Coast Guard matters, emphasized, “Many young Coast Guard families and employees live paycheck to paycheck. Asking them to protect our waters without necessary stability is a heavy burden on those who ensure Alaska’s safety.”

Begich reiterated his unwavering support for the Coast Guard, asserting that their members should never be regarded as “collateral damage in Washington’s political fights.” Fellow Alaskan Congressman Dan Sullivan warned about increasing military activity from China and Russia near Alaska, noting this issue is not widely recognized beyond the region. He remarked, “Let’s just say the world’s largest marine research fleet didn’t venture off Alaska’s coast to just ‘save the whales.’”

He pointed out that Alaska holds half of the nation’s coastline and plays a significant role in the seafood industry, both of which depend on the Coast Guard’s support. Representative Jimmy Patronis (R-Florida) emphasized the critical role of Coast Guard members involved in drug interdiction, underscoring that potential funding shortages could leave them without pay. “They chase drug traffickers at incredible speeds and make significant arrests,” he explained. “This shutdown has serious morale implications.”

Patronis also observed that Democrats face challenges due to a supportive base for ICE. He sarcastically noted the irony in the fact that the same Tom Homan they criticize was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama. Meanwhile, he indicated that the demand for legislative action from Schumer is misplaced since those disrupting operations will continue to do so regardless of enacted measures.

Representative Salud Carvajal of California, the leading Democrat on the committee, stated that Republicans currently possess the capability to reinstate Coast Guard funding. He urged bipartisan cooperation to create sensible protections demanded by the public following recent tragic events involving ICE’s oversight. Meanwhile, fellow Representative Brian Mast (R-Florida), who also represents a district with a significant Coast Guard presence, pointed out that the recent government shutdown left many service members reeling. They are now, unfortunately, preparing for another similar crisis.

Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Delaware), who ranks on the Senate Commerce Committee’s Coast Guard subcommittee, insisted that the families of Coast Guard members should not be deprived of their pay. She highlighted that DHS could easily adjust funds to ensure service members receive their salaries while critiquing the expansion of ICE’s operations. According to her, Congress should find a responsible solution to maintain crucial operations while reforming DHS. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Coast Guard for comments.
