Tragic Discovery in Florida Home

A U.S. Coast Guard officer, along with his wife and their two children, were found dead in their Florida residence, prompting concerns that the family may have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. This discovery came not long after a routine phone call with the officer’s mother.

The deceased have been identified as Johann Sanchez, 33; his wife, Rebecca Santos; their 15-year-old son, Michael Melendez; and their 2-year-old son, Samuel Sanchez. Authorities found the family inside their home in Ocala, which is situated about 110 miles from Orlando, late on Friday night, as stated by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Jackie Soto, Sanchez’s devastated mother, expressed her shock, noting that she had spoken briefly with her son earlier that day. “I can’t believe it. This is my baby,” she said, clearly overcome with grief.

The conversation between mother and son was normal, with Sanchez even baking a cake at that time, she recalled.

Authorities have indicated that there was no suspicion of foul play and theorized that the family likely succumbed to an odorless, toxic gas. “Investigators believe the cause of death is carbon monoxide poisoning, but this has yet to be officially confirmed by the medical examiner,” the sheriff’s office advised.

Ongoing investigations aim to uncover more details about the incident.

The family’s pastor had first become concerned after they missed a church event on Thursday. Upon visiting, he found the house dark and quiet, so he left. When he returned on Friday without a response, he decided to call emergency services.

Neighbors described the family as friendly and pleasant, noting they had lived in the neighborhood for about ten months. Sanchez and Santos had met at a church in Massachusetts prior to relocating to Florida about a year ago.

Sendy Sanchez, the officer’s brother, mentioned that Johann was a devoted Christian, committed to his family, faith, and public service. “No one expected a tragedy like this,” he reflected. “We are just devastated.”

At Ocala Christian Academy, where Michael was in ninth grade, the administrator, Randy Osborn, shared that he was active in his church community and was preparing for a sermon. Faculty praised his leadership qualities and dedication to studying the Bible. “He loved playing the piano, but, more importantly, he sought to serve God and others,” Osborn added.
