Cobi Jones and His Legacy with U.S. Soccer
Cobi Jones has a wealth of experience when it comes to representing the United States in soccer. In fact, no other American men’s soccer player has quite the same credentials as the former USMNT star.
Holding the record for the most caps—164—for the U.S. men’s national team, Jones has competed in significant events like the 1992 Summer Olympics and three World Cups. The 55-year-old has been through quite a journey, including the 1994 World Cup, which was the last time the tournament graced U.S. soil.
World Cup Anticipation
As the 2026 World Cup approaches, kicking off with the USMNT’s opener in Los Angeles this Friday, Jones shared some insights about the pressures the national team faces ahead of the big event that spans across North America.
He emphasized the importance of understanding the significance of this home World Cup for the players. “When you tell these guys about playing for your country… there’s going to be some pressure,” he noted during the Blue Carpet 2026 World Cup Kickoff Party at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Yet, he reassured them, saying that everyone back home is rooting for their success.
Pride in Representation
Reflecting on his own experiences, Jones expressed a deep sense of pride being part of a pivotal era for U.S. soccer. “Throughout my years playing for Team USA, I’ve always felt proud,” he shared. He recalled a time when soccer wasn’t widely embraced in the U.S. Being part of the generation that changed that narrative is something Jones holds dear.
Looking Ahead
When it comes to predictions for the USMNT’s chances in the upcoming World Cup, Jones simply hopes to see them win their group, which includes teams like Australia, Turkey, and Paraguay. Their first match is set against Paraguay on Friday at 9 PM ET.
