Coca-Cola is set to introduce soda made with cane sugar in the U.S. as part of a wider effort aligning with President Trump’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) initiative.
This announcement was made by a spokesperson for the company. Starting this fall, Coca-Cola will offer a “new 12-ounce single-serve glass bottle in selected U.S. markets, which provides consumers a classic way to enjoy Coca-Cola’s original flavor, made with American cane sugar.”
President Trump mentioned in July that Coca-Cola had agreed to the change, expressing his gratitude on social media, noting, “I want to thank all the authorities at Coca-Cola. This is a very good move by them – you get the idea. Much better.”
Regarding cane sugar, it’s often less processed compared to granulated sugar, with a more golden color and larger grains. It also has a hint of molasses flavor.
Interestingly, cane sugar is less soluble than regular granulated sugar, and its crystals maintain their shape when heated. This property can be quite beneficial for certain baked goods.
However, if you’re baking, you might not want to swap cane sugar directly for granulated sugar unless you’re aiming for that raw sugar crunch and extra flavor from the molasses. But if you’re feeling adventurous, replacing it 1:1 is possible.
In the same month as Trump’s announcement, Steak ‘n Shake revealed they would also serve Coca-Cola made with cane sugar in glass bottles.
“Starting August 1st, Steak ‘n Shake will serve Coca-Cola with real sugar in glass bottles. America deserves the best!” they stated, continuing their journey with MAHA.
Coca-Cola had previously used sugar in some of its other beverages, having switched to high fructose corn syrup for many soft drinks years ago.
Meanwhile, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. criticized high fructose corn syrup, labeling it as “poison” and linking it to obesity and diabetes issues.
“If you’re going to drink Coca-Cola, drink that because it doesn’t have Mexican Coke in it,” he remarked.
