Colbert jokes Supreme Court should be ‘careful’ because ‘Seal Team 6 currently works for Joe Biden’

“The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert was outraged Thursday over the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to hear former President Trump’s immunity claims stemming from Jack Smith’s 2020 election interference investigation. This further delayed his criminal trial.

At one point in the monologue, Colbert joked to Supreme Court justices, “Be careful how you decide on this, because Seal Team 6 is now working for Joe Biden.” said.

The high court agreed to consider whether to protect Trump from prosecution in the case. The case will have major legal and political implications for the nation in this election year. The justices are moving forward with the appeal, with oral arguments scheduled for late April and a decision on the merits expected by late June.

In response to the decision to postpone Trump’s trial, late-night TV hosts argued that the court was violating the Constitution.

“In the landmark case ‘Does People v. Law Matter?'” What, really, is going on? ! ” Colbert complained. “If I eat one more piece of this steaming poop, I’ll swear to the ghost of John Marshall that I’ll drive to Washington and rub my ax against your gavel!” he joked.

“This is not a difficult decision, folks!” Colbert insisted, pointing to the 3-0 ruling by the D.C. Court of Appeals that Trump is not immune from prosecution in the 2020 election interference case.

He further lamented that the high court’s decision could be delayed until late September or October because the trial judge had given the defense 88 days to prepare.

Colbert used Trump’s legal team’s own arguments to warn the Supreme Court against getting on President Biden’s bad side.

“It’s a little strange that SCOTUS feels it needs to consider whether there is a law,” he said. “A quick note to the court: SEAL Team 6 is now working for Joe Biden, so be careful how you decide on this matter.”

Colbert was referring to Trump’s legal team’s response to a hypothetical situation posed by a judge on the D.C. Court of Appeals last month. The judge questioned whether the president had immunity to direct Seal Team 6 to assassinate political opponents. Trump’s lawyers argued that the president has immunity from prosecution in the case unless he is impeached and convicted by the Senate.

“Remember the Chinese proverb: Revenge tastes best when it’s old,” he joked.

Colbert then declared the Supreme Court “unconstitutional” because it was “out of touch with reality” and what the American people wanted.

The agreement to review Trump’s case also upset MSNBC’s liberal hosts.

Rachel Maddow said the decision conjured up a doomsday scenario in which Trump could become a dictator for life if he wins the election.

“Without waiting for a verdict, the conclusion we can reach at this point based on their actions to date is that they have ensured that Mr. Trump will not be brought to justice, and that necessarily the president will not be exempt. If they are prosecuted after they leave office, it would mean that if Donald Trump was president by then, he would never be able to leave office. ” she warned on Thursday’s show “All In With Chris Hayes.”
