CBS’s Stephen Colbert reacted humorously to the suspension of comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s show, featuring a parody video where the Disney character Lumiere dons a MAGA hat, instructing his coworkers to remain silent.
“Listen,” Lumiere states in a video aired on “The Late Show” on Thursday. “In light of Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, the Walt Disney Corporation has an important message for all employees.”
In the video, Lumiere, wearing a MAGA hat, makes gestures towards silverware, representing various networks owned by Disney, including ABC, Hulu, and ESPN.
“Close your trap, close your trap,” he sings in a parody of the song “Be Our Guest” from the 1991 Disney film, taking a jab at President Trump.
He continues, “So don’t make scenes or mention Jeffrey Epstein, or the show will be abolished. Close your trap.”
Kimmel’s show was suspended on Wednesday following backlash over his remarks regarding the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
During Monday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel joked about Trump mourning Kirk, commenting that the MAGA community was “desperate” to depict Kirk’s murderer as “something other than one of them.”
Brendan Kerr, the chairman of Trump’s Federal Communications Commission, criticized Kimmel’s remarks and urged local stations to reconsider airing ABC’s programming.
In response to the controversy, Nexstar, the largest local news broadcaster, along with Sinclair, the biggest ABC affiliate, decided to preempt Kimmel’s show.
ABC quickly announced Kimmel’s suspension, prompting celebrations from both Trump and Kerr.
Colbert’s defense of Kimmel came after CBS announced the termination of his own show, set to end in May, which they described as a “purely financial decision.” Nevertheless, free speech advocates voiced their concerns.
Other late-night hosts have rallied in support of Kimmel, openly criticizing the Trump administration while praising him.
John Stewart, humorously noted on a special edition of “The Daily Show,” said, “We have another fun, hilarious administration-based show,” continuing to sarcastically applaud Trump throughout the segment.
Jimmy Fallon referred to Kimmel as “a decent, funny, and loving man,” expressing hope for his show’s return.
