Colbert mocks Biden’s border shift, joking border will have ‘gluten-free’ wall and ‘pro-choice’ barbed wire

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert mocked President Biden’s attempts to secure the border just before the 2024 election.

The White House on Tuesday announced a long-awaited executive order that would block illegal immigrants from applying for asylum if crossings at the southern border reach certain levels, a move that has angered many progressives within the Democratic Party.

“‘So we’re going to close the border, guys, but the wall will be gluten-free and the barbed wire will support abortion freedom. It’s not a border wall. It’s a border wall,'” Colbert jokingly encouraged as a way to convince progressive Democrats to support increased border security.

Biden has been criticized within his party for using the same tactics as Trump to control the border.

Stephen Colbert talked about how hard it will be for Biden to sell tough border policies to progressive Democrats.

Colbert outlined the policy shift, claiming that Biden has issued an executive order “allowing for a temporary border closure to migrants, which has been described as the toughest border policy implemented by a Democrat in the modern era.”

“As an anti-immigration liberal, this is a difficult issue for me,” he noted.

“This order has not been well received by progressives,” Colbert said, referring to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.)’s criticism of Biden when the policy was discussed earlier this year.

“In fact, in February, AOC tweeted about the proposal at the time: ‘Seeking asylum is everyone’s legal right. Impersonating Trump doesn’t help you beat Trump,'” Colbert said, poking fun at his show and his frequent Trump impersonations.

Biden is expected to announce the border measures amid rising political tensions ahead of the November election.

“‘No, I’m going to do a Trump impersonation. She’s right, guys, I could fill up a 13-minute monologue every night by doing a Trump impersonation,'” Colbert said, doing a Trump impersonation responding to Ocasio-Cortez.

“And here’s the thing. No, listen carefully. Listen guys, this is true. I’m telling you, he said he wouldn’t do it anymore, but Stephen Colbert, the talentless liar, broke his promise to himself. Seriously. How does he look at himself in the mirror at night? Sad!”
