Kaepernick Criticizes NFL’s Social Justice Efforts

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been vocal about his discontent with the NFL’s approach to social justice, labeling it as hypocritical. He points out the irony in the league promoting “performative” initiatives after effectively sidelining him from his football career.

Recently, the NFL announced it would continue its “anti-racism” campaign for a seventh consecutive year. This involves showcasing social justice messages along the sidelines and placing “anti-racism” decals on player helmets.

However, Kaepernick expresses skepticism about the depth of the league’s commitment to these issues. He stated that in his view, the NFL isn’t genuinely serious about social justice, as reported by NBC News.

He criticized NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s recent remarks regarding racism and expressed his belief that they stemmed more from player pressure than true concern. Kaepernick described Goodell’s apology for previously ignoring players’ advocacy for Black Lives Matter as “laughable” and “disingenuous.”

“We had been trying to address the issue that the NFL created with blackballing me for years,” Kaepernick remarked. “To come out and say we should have listened on the back of that — while I’m still actively trying to play in the NFL — it’s so performative.”

Kaepernick became known for his protests against racial injustice in 2016 when he chose to kneel during the national anthem. He continued this form of protest throughout that NFL season but has not played since becoming a free agent after the season’s end.

He further criticized the NFL’s on-field messaging against racism, suggesting it’s merely a marketing tactic. “’End Racism’ in the back of the end zone is a great marketing campaign, but what are the actions behind it?” he questioned.

According to NBC, Kaepernick pointed out that while the league displayed slogans in stadiums, it had also engaged in practices like “race norming,” which argued that Black players started their careers with lower cognitive abilities in an effort to minimize payments from a concussion lawsuit. The league ended this practice in 2021.

Despite these changes, Kaepernick believes that the NFL’s gestures toward social justice are superficial. “I don’t think the NFL has materially changed. None of their actions show that,” he asserted. He expressed disappointment that the league seems to have reverted to its previous ways, which he views as a significant loss for the movement for justice.
