University Cheerleader Arrested in Toddler’s Death

A cheerleader from a university was arrested on Wednesday related to the death of a toddler, per a press release from the Lexington Police Department.

Laken Snelling, 21, faced charges of abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant. These charges stemmed from a call made on August 27 regarding an unresponsive toddler. Upon arriving, officers reported finding the child.

According to the details surrounding Snelling’s arrest, officials noted the toddler was discovered “wrapped in a towel inside a black garbage bag.” It was reported that Snelling acknowledged having given birth after speaking with police. She allegedly attempted to conceal evidence and placed cleaning items, including the wrapped toddler, into garbage bags.

The source also identified Snelling as a student at the University of Kentucky.

She faced charges related to the August 27 incident but was able to post a $100,000 bond. Currently, she is under house arrest at her parents’ home in Jefferson City, Tennessee, as indicated in court documents.

Snelling is listed as a member of the University of Kentucky’s stunt cheerleading team and is confirmed to be a senior. Reports suggest that she had previously expressed a desire for motherhood in posts shared on social media.

The Fayette County Coroner’s office is currently investigating the cause of the infant’s death, according to NBC News.

The Lexington Police Department has been contacted for further comments but has not responded immediately.
