Colombian President Calls for Trump’s Resignation

Colombian President Gustavo Petro seems to have suggested that Donald Trump should resign during a recent interview with MRC Latino on October 20. He discussed the growing tensions between the U.S. and various South American nations in light of Trump’s deportation policies and approaches to drug enforcement.

Petro stated, “Humanity has a first way out, and that is to change Trump in various ways. The easiest may be through Trump himself,” adding that another option is simply to “get rid of Trump.”

He expressed serious concerns, remarking, “U.S. government officials committed murder and violated our sovereignty.”

Trump hasn’t held back his criticism of Petro, branding him as the “leader of illegal drugs” in a post on Truth Social. He accused Petro of inaction against what he claims is Colombia’s dominant illegal drug trade and labeled Petro as a “lowly rated and very unpopular leader.” Trump warned that if Petro fails to address the drug trafficking routes to the U.S., then the U.S. would intervene, stating, “that’s not going to work.”

In a recent military action, the U.S. used a drone to destroy a submarine believed to be involved in drug trafficking off Colombia’s coast on September 16.

Last week, Petro reiterated strong accusations, stating, “U.S. government officials committed murder and violated our sovereignty in our territorial waters,” and he demanded an explanation for the drone attack, calling the submarine a distressed fishing vessel.

In response to these tensions, Trump announced a halt to all U.S. financial aid to Colombia, cutting off hundreds of millions intended for economic, military, and humanitarian assistance. He also referred to Petro as “a crazy person with a lot of problems, mentally challenged.” He asserted that the aid cuts were due to Colombia’s unwillingness to combat drug trafficking, saying, “Colombia is a drug-producing institution, and we’re not going to be part of it. So we’re going to throw away all the money we’re giving them.”
