Comer Looks Into Potential Noncitizens on Michigan Voter Lists

Investigation into Noncitizens on Michigan’s Voter Rolls

Recent developments have emerged as Republicans probe allegations that noncitizens might be listed on voter and jury rolls in Michigan, aiming to safeguard citizens’ voting rights.

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer (R-Ky.), along with Representative John James (R-Mich.), has reached out to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. They are seeking clarification on whether specific counties in the Detroit area may be infringing on federal laws, as reported by Fox News.

In their correspondence to Bondi, Comer and James noted, “Noncitizens are appearing on state jury rolls and, in some cases, being registered as voters.”

The letter highlighted that juries within the state are composed of individuals holding driver’s licenses and state IDs, which typically register them to vote automatically unless they opt out.

It was further mentioned that Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini uncovered significant discrepancies while comparing the county’s jury rolls to the Michigan Secretary of State’s list of eligible voters. Over four months, it was found that 239 noncitizens were present on these jury rolls, with 14 of them having been registered to vote at some time.

A report from 2020 by the Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) revealed around 350,000 deceased individuals still listed as eligible voters, with reports of multiple votes cast in the past two elections, according to Breitbart News.

The following year, PILF took legal action against Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for not removing over 25,000 possibly deceased individuals from the voter rolls, despite warnings about the situation.

In December, the Republican National Committee (RNC) also filed a lawsuit against Benson, claiming that Michigan’s election law effectively breaches the state constitution by enabling non-residents to participate in elections.

Comer and James contended that civil rights legislations empower Bondi to take necessary actions regarding this matter, urging her to evaluate if similar situations exist in other states.

Additionally, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) recently informed Breitbart News that he is co-sponsoring Rep. Chip Roy’s (R-Texas) SAVE America Act, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that only American citizens vote in U.S. elections. “This, along with voter ID requirements, is not a matter of controversy. It is simply common sense,” Emmer remarked.
