Comer warns Garland over handling of potential Hunter Biden contempt resolution

House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) urged Attorney General Merrick Garland to hold the president's son Hunter Biden on the same level as Republicans charged with contempt of Congress. He warned that if he did not do so, Biden could be arrested. He faces impeachment.

“As for Merrick Garland, we know how he treated two Republicans who were charged with contempt of Congress.” Comer told Newsmax's Chris Salcedo. on monday. “Now he will have the same opportunity to do justice as the Democratic senators who denied lawful subpoenas.”

Salcedo told Kamel that Hunter Biden did not appear for his deposition, as did former President Trump's economic adviser Peter Navarro, who was found in contempt of Congress in September. If not addressed, Mr. Garland asked if he would have further grounds for impeachment.

Comer responded, “I think so.”

The committee on Monday released a resolution charging Hunter Biden with contempt of Congress for failing to comply with a subpoena for a private deposition as part of President Biden's impeachment inquiry.

The Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee are scheduled to step up Wednesday to consider contempt of Congress motions after Hunter Biden failed to appear for his deposition on Dec. 13. Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has vowed to advance the resolution. .

The president's son said he would appear at the hearing, and his legal team said private testimony would be misrepresented by House Republicans. House Republicans said the public format was insufficient for the investigation and that private testimony was the norm.

The House Republican impeachment inquiry into President Biden is examining the Justice Department's handling of Hunter Biden's overseas dealings and tax crimes investigation into the president's son. Both Hunter Biden and the president deny that President Biden engaged in any wrongdoing.

Comer's recent comments drew criticism from Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) as Congress heads toward a new government shutdown deadline.

“We're 10 days away from the government shutdown. What are Republicans focused on? Hunter Biden testifying publicly under oath before Congress instead of taking a private deposition.” Because he agreed, he threatened to impeach AG Garland.” Lieu posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “House Republicans are not serious people.”
