As Pride Month draws to a close, Allie Beth Stuckey I made an interesting observation.
“The stores I frequent have no Pride merchandise this year. Most did last year and one in particular had a full rainbow apparel display and has nothing this year. Has anyone else seen the same,” Stuckey wrote in response to X’s post.
Even Target has stopped selling Pride apparel at many of its stores, and one of Stuckey’s followers sent her a photo of the retail giant showing patriotic red, white and blue merchandise being sold at the store in place of the rainbow slogan T-shirts and children’s clothing it sold last year.
“They actually had a patriotic red, white and blue sign up, saying, ‘Just so you know, thank you for your service,’ and that’s a message to our veterans, which I think is a wonderful thing,” Stuckey explained.
“I think that’s really interesting,” she added, noting that it could be a sign of something bigger and better.
“Some say it’s an election year so they’re trying not to scare people. It’s so blatant that even moderates are like, ‘Does everything have to be gay in June or can’t something neutral be better?'” Stuckey said.
“So some people are saying, ‘This is a conspiracy or a coordinated effort to suppress it this year so people don’t panic before the election,'” she added.
But she doesn’t buy it.
“That may be true, but I don’t believe that all these local businesses and some of the businesses I’ve worked with are part of a larger coordinated effort to undermine Pride in an election year,” she said, noting she has her own theory as to why the businesses have undermined Pride.
“I think it’s because there’s been a real backlash and a pushback. I really do. I think that’s a great thing,” she said.
