Controversy at FIFA World Cup Coverage
FIFA World Cup soccer coverage gained attention on Tuesday when FOX analyst and former professional player Landon Donovan labeled the French team as “arrogant.”
During a first-round match that was tied 0-0 at halftime, Donovan commented that the French team seemed to be underestimating their opponents, describing their demeanor as “arrogant” and “casual.”
This statement was met with pushback from fellow analyst Thierry Henry, a former French player widely regarded as one of the best in soccer history. He expressed confusion over Donovan’s remarks. “I just don’t understand it. Just because we’re not up 1-0, 2-0, or 3-0 after 15 minutes, there’s no need to say that,” Henry remarked. He added that if viewers fail to recognize Senegal’s potential, that’s on them.
France ultimately triumphed over Senegal with a score of 3-1, but Donovan’s critiques lingered among the FOX analysts.
Former USMNT player Alexi Lalas responded, suggesting that while one could argue about arrogance, the French team’s confidence stems from their skill.
Another analyst, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, took a more direct approach, branding Donovan’s comments as “ignorance.” “It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence,” he stated. “Ignorant people say it’s arrogance. Intelligent people say it’s confidence.”
The commentary shocked the rest of the panel, with Henry’s expression of wide-eyed surprise conveying his disbelief at Ibrahimovic’s strong words.
This isn’t the first time FOX staff have faced scrutiny; Alexi Lalas previously criticized James Corden harshly, which displeased the network.
Meanwhile, on the field, Kylian Mbappé scored two goals in the match, raising his total World Cup goals to 14, making him the third-highest scorer in World Cup history, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, and Miroslav Klose.
France is set to play their next match on June 22 against Iraq.
