NEA Under Scrutiny Amid Pandemic Challenges

For years, the National Education Association (NEA) has wielded significant political influence, often focusing on its own interests and pushing a progressive agenda. The Covid-19 pandemic, however, has cast a spotlight on the organization, prompting deeper scrutiny and reflection within the union.

Recent critiques highlight the NEA as a bastion of progressive politics and a key affiliate of the Democratic Party, allegedly aiming to infuse public schools with its ideological stance. But rather than reassessing its priorities, the NEA has seemingly doubled down on its past beliefs and initiatives.

Controversial Resolutions at Annual Conference

During their recent representative assembly in Portland, the NEA made headlines as details of controversial resolutions were leaked. The union’s shift towards more secretive operations has also been notable, particularly in the wake of public outcry against extremism.

Among the unsettling materials distributed at the NEA convention was a “pronoun guide,” which suggested that failure to disclose personal pronouns could be deemed “unsafe.” Additionally, union documents included a “Land Approval Guide,” encouraging members to confront the historical injustices related to Indigenous lands, alongside procedures for reporting violations of social justice norms.

Parental Concerns and Union Priorities

A nine-page report presented at the convention outlined the union’s focus for the coming year, boasting intentions to spearhead lawsuits against certain governmental policies, among other objectives. This report also mentioned plans to engage in protests and political campaigns, aiming to influence the upcoming midterm elections.

While these initiatives may resonate with some, many parents are left wondering about the tangible benefits these actions bring to education or student learning. Essentially, if the NEA truly controls the narrative in schools, what does that mean for the future of public education?

Reassessing NEA’s Federal Charter

Originally granted a federal charter by Congress in 1906, the NEA has been under fire for perceived ideological extremism. While there have been efforts to repeal this charter, some argue that the NEA’s incorporation predates it under local laws.

The proposed Student Act aims not to eliminate the NEA but rather to revise its charter to ensure accountability and transparency, holding the union to the same standards of public service as other federally recognized organizations.

This act would also mean that teachers have the right to opt out of union membership without repercussions and would eliminate taxpayer funding for the NEA and its affiliates.
