As part of a campaign launched by March for Our Lives and Change the Ref, lawmakers are receiving calls for gun control through the voices of people killed by AI-generated gunfire.
CNN report One of the AI-generated voices is said to be that of Joaquin Oliver, a student who was killed in the February 14, 2018 Parkland High School shooting.
When making a call using the AI-generated voice representing Oliver, the lawmaker will hear the following:
Six years ago, I was a senior at Parkland. On Valentine’s Day that year, a number of students and teachers were murdered by someone using an AR-15 assault rifle. Six years have passed and you haven’t done anything. Nothing can stop the mass shootings that have continued to occur ever since.
Actually, I died that day in Parkland. My body was destroyed by weapons of war. I came back today because my parents used AI to recreate my voice and call you.
The gun control group Change the Ref was founded by Oliver’s father, Manuel, who said:
For the past six years, my wife and I have worked hard to make our voices heard. Nonstop. We’ve tried just about every way to address gun violence that gets people’s attention. We haven’t had much success.
…
So we decided, you know? Deliver the voice of your loved ones. Let Joaquin’s voice be heard.
The Parkland shooting was carried out by a 19-year-old boy who passed a background check and purchased a gun. according to Sun Sentinel. And the 19-year-old boy used only a 10-round magazine to carry out the heinous act.
Miami Herald, March 1, 2018 I got it. Florida Sen. Laura Book (D) said the Parkland shooter “only came with a 10-round magazine because it was a large magazine.” [magazines] It won’t fit in his duffel bag. ”
Background checks and a 10-round magazine limit are two of the gun regulations most often promoted in the name of safety.
