After the Trump administration decided to restrict Harvard’s ability to admit international students, U.S. Congressman Ro Khanna voiced strong opposition. He called out prominent figures in the tech sector, including Elon Musk, Marc Andreessen, David Sacks, Chamath Palihapitiya, Vinod Khosla, and Reid Hoffman, urging them to speak out against the ban.
In a post on X, Khanna remarked, “Everyone in Silicon Valley is willing to oppose Trump’s ban on Harvard’s current and future international students.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration among tech leaders to stand up for educational opportunities.
In response to the government’s actions, Harvard University condemned the move, labeling it illegal and unfair, claiming it jeopardizes the future of many students and academics. The institution has taken legal action, including filing complaints and seeking temporary restraining orders to protect its interests.
A recent statement from Harvard’s president pointed out that the federal government had revoked the university’s accreditation under the Student and Exchange Visitors Program (SEVP). This decision has stripped Harvard of its ability to sponsor international students, asserting that it undermines their academic autonomy.
Harvard reiterated its dedication to upholding academic freedom and supporting affected individuals while calling the government’s actions illegal and harmful. The university expressed concern that this kind of behavior sets a troubling precedent for institutions across the nation, risking the dreams and aspirations of students who come to the U.S. seeking education.
On the previous Thursday, the White House remarked that registering international students is a privilege, not an entitlement. Harvard’s leadership has accused the administration of transforming respectable institutions into venues for anti-American sentiments and other harmful ideologies.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson stated, “They are not addressing the significant challenges that affect American students and must now face the repercussions of their actions.” Tensions have escalated between Harvard and the Trump administration regarding employment practices and allegations of anti-Semitism on campus, particularly in the context of protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
