Conservative activist Robby Starbuck sues Meta for defamation over AI chatbot answers

Conservative activist Robbie Starbuck slapped Mark Zuckerberg's meta in a honour-loss lawsuit over a false response about him, generated by an AI chatbot, including allegations that he was a Holocaust denier and took part in the January 6 Capitol riots.

Starbuck is best known for major campaigns such as Walmart and Harley-Davidson over Divisive Dei Practices, but is seeking more than $5 million in damages from the lawsuit filed Tuesday and first in Delaware Superior Court. Retrieved by Wall Street Journal.

in Videos posted to his X account Announced the lawsuit, Starbuck shared a clip claiming that Meta AI's audio output was “related to extremist views, including anti-Semitism and denial of the Holocaust.” He added that he was involved in the Capitol riots by “filming and promoting the event.”

“In my lawsuit today, I'm going to have them settle this issue completely,” Starbuck said. “One of the largest and most powerful companies in human history cannot allow honor losses to be a core feature of its business model.”

Meta did not specifically respond to Starbuck's allegations.

“As part of our continued efforts to improve our model, we have already released updates and are continuing to do so,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.

Starbuck, 36, told the Journal that he first learned about the situation last August after a Vermont Harley-Davidson dealer posted a screenshot of X.

Starbucks denied the chatbot allegations that Sand wrote online that day that Meta “hears from my lawyer.” However, the false claims are said to have continued for several months.

The counter-eyed activist told the newspaper he was concerned that error-prone AI could be used to determine factors such as individual credit and insurance risk.

He says he was in Tennessee on January 6, 2021 when the Capitol riots were occurring. His researchers added that they were unable to track the chatbot's claims against certain sources of information.

“The damage to my reputation is obvious, but so is the potential risk to our election and your reputation next time,” Starbuck said in his X-Video.

In Starbuck's lawsuit, shortly after contacting the company last summer, his lawyer said he received responses from Attorney Meta, who said the company had made his claim “serious” and that the investigation was underway.

The lawsuit alleges that Meta's AI was making false claims about him just like it did this month.

It appears that the company's AI has enacted search restrictions related to Starbuck. “I'm sorry, but I can't help with your request right now,” he answers a direct question.

According to the Journal, no US court has awarded damages to anyone who claimed to have been slandered by an AI chatbot.

Traditionally, social media platforms like Meta have enjoyed drastic protection thanks to Section 230, a provision that protects them from being liable for third-party content posted on the platform.

However, it remains unclear whether the same protection applies to outputs generated by high-tech companies' own AI products. Several lawmakers are pushing for a federal framework to regulate AI, but comprehensive laws have not yet been passed.

Meanwhile, Meta, Google and other tech giants operating in AI races have repeatedly stated that chatbots are prone to hallucinations or are prone to misinformation.
