Tragic Shooting at Brown University Claims Two Lives
Ella Cook, the 19-year-old Vice President of the Republican group at Brown University, has been identified as one of the victims of a mass shooting that occurred on Saturday at the Ivy League institution. Reports confirm that a gunman opened fire in a classroom during final exams, resulting in Cook’s death and that of another individual, along with injuries to nine others.
The authorities had a suspect in custody by Monday morning, described as a “person of interest” shortly after the shooting. The investigation continues as the community grapples with this tragic event.
Cook, originally from Alabama, was a sophomore known for her engagement in conservative politics and her involvement in the Christian faith community. Memorials and tributes poured in following her death, highlighting her vibrant spirit.
In a statement, Marin Bartao, President of Collegiate Republicans of America, expressed shock at Cook’s passing, describing her as courageous and kind-hearted. “Our prayers are with her family and the entire campus as they begin to heal from this tragedy,” Bartao wrote on social media.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt also reacted, stating simply, “I have no words,” and extended thoughts to Cook’s family. She mentioned the deep impact of the loss on her loved ones.
Cook was described as a bright light by Pastor Craig Smalley of Advent Cathedral Church in Birmingham. During a service, he noted her active role in the church and community, emphasizing the warmth and positivity she brought while at Brown University.
Alabama’s Lieutenant Governor, Will Ainsworth, chimed in, calling her a devoted Christian and a strong conservative representative of Alabama. He reflected on the tragedy of a promising future cut short and urged prayers for her family.
The second victim linked to this incident was a freshman student studying neuroscience, who has not yet been publicly identified. Kimari Manns, the student’s roommate, confirmed that they were among those who lost their lives in the shooting.
