Trump Holds Talks Amid Protests in Minnesota
On January 26, President Trump reported having “very good” and “productive” discussions with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey as protests against ICE escalated and tensions rose following the tragic shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Preti.
According to the statements from all parties, the discussions focused on the protests against ICE in Minnesota and the potential easing of federal immigration enforcement. This included talks of reducing federal agents, allowing for state-led investigations into recent police shootings, helping to extradite criminal non-citizens from state custody, and confirming the reappointment of Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino along with appointing Tom Homan as Border Czar to handle on-the-ground issues.
Some conservative commentators perceived this as the Trump administration yielding to leftist protestors. For instance, Glenn Beck mentioned that his initial reaction was one of doubt. “When I first saw this article yesterday…is he waving the white flag? What is he doing?” he reflected.
However, further analysis led Glenn to think that what’s happening in the Twin Cities might not be a retreat but rather a form of “counterinsurgency.”
“We’re seeing Trump change the battlefield, not abandon it,” he explained. If Trump had simply given in, he would have halted the nationwide crackdown, stopped ICE operations, publicly criticized Homan and Miller, acknowledged mistakes, and accepted accusations that ICE was acting like a Gestapo.
Instead, Glenn asserts that President Trump adjusted enforcement standards, redirected political pressure, softened public perceptions, maintained legal authority, and shifted responsibilities to the states. “This isn’t a capitulation. I believe this is a strategy to rethink the fight, which is quite clever,” he remarked.
Glenn emphasized that Trump articulated ICE’s core purpose from the start: “To remove truly dangerous criminals from our streets.” He added, “The aim was never to have agents everywhere at all times. It was about forcing blue state leaders to choose between shielding violent offenders and working with federal law enforcement.”
He pointed out that Minnesota is currently in significant disorder, which could aid radical leftists who want to instigate a “crisis of legitimacy.” It’s exactly the kind of tension that insurrectionists hope to provoke in Trump.
Yet, he astutely chose not to escalate things further. Rather, he opted for strategies that would help him prevail in the “optics war.” The reassignment of Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, dubbed a “walking headline” and representative of the left-wing anti-ICE narrative, is one such move.
Glenn noted that this single action had a lot of consequences. It disrupted Senate negotiations, took media attention away from certain figures, and shifted the focus from people to policy.
“This is classic Trump,” he remarked. “Never fight on someone else’s ground if it’s not your cause… Choose your own hill to die on,” he quoted from Trump’s famous book, “The Art of the Deal.”
In discussing his conversation with Walz and Frey, Glenn concluded that these weren’t signs of defeat, but rather strategic traps.
