Construction Worker Dies After Fall at Hudson Yards Site
A construction worker tragically lost his life Thursday morning after falling 60 feet into a ditch at a Hudson Yards construction site, according to the FDNY.
The worker was engaged in the installation of a newly poured foundation wall as part of the substantial Hudson Yards concrete casing project, located at 12th Avenue and West 30th Street, when the accident occurred around 8:50 a.m.
Battalion Chief Anthony Romano reported that emergency responders arrived at the site within three minutes.
As firefighters approached, they found the worker at the bottom of the pit, where he was unresponsive.
“They found construction workers at the bottom of the pit, 60 feet down,” Russo noted.
First responders quickly assessed the situation and determined the worker had no pulse. They set up a high-point anchor and employed a Stokes basket for extraction. Russo mentioned that it took about 5 to 10 minutes before they managed to wake the victim and swiftly brought him to FDNY EMS for further care.
The worker was transported to a nearby hospital, but despite life-saving attempts, he succumbed to his injuries.
Identified as an employee of New York Concrete Corporation, the worker’s identity has not yet been disclosed, and the reason for his fall is still under scrutiny.
“What was injected yesterday was the foundation wall,” stated FDNY Emergency Department Chief Nicholas Aiello during a media briefing. “We don’t know why or how he fell.”
Work on the third section of the project, which aims to link the Hudson River Tunnel to New York-Penn Station, has been suspended pending the investigation.
The project was expected to wrap up next year. In a statement, the developers—Gateway Development Commission, Amtrak, and their affiliates—expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family of the worker who lost his life, saying, “Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
