Construction worker Rafael Peralta passes away after being trapped during a water main break

Tragic Construction Accident in Long Island

A 56-year-old construction worker from New York lost his life on Friday morning after becoming submerged during a water main break near Roosevelt Field, Long Island’s largest shopping mall.

Rafael Peralta, who lived in Babylon, was working beneath Ring Road outside the mall when the incident occurred around 11:13 a.m., as reported by Nassau County police and local news.

His coworkers managed to pull him from the water before first responders arrived to perform “life-saving measures” at the scene.

Despite their efforts, he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Peralta was employed by a contractor engaged in work on a private water main and hydrant, according to news reports citing the Town of Hempstead.

The water main belonged to Roosevelt Field, which had hired Peralta’s company.

“Losing a loved one is really hard. Knowing that they went out there to provide for their families…” shared Alice Lindow, a New York resident, expressing her sympathy for the grieving family. “I just want to pray for God’s comfort and strength for the family that is grieving a lost one, because it’s never easy.”

In response to the tragedy, police initiated an investigation, closing Ring Road between Stewart Avenue and Zeckendorf Boulevard for several hours.

Sadly, this incident mirrors another tragedy that occurred earlier this year in Illinois, where a worker named Matthew Heiden died after being trapped in an underground vault during a similar water main break.

Heiden, a 20-year-old public works employee from Westmont, was reportedly sent underground without proper precautions, and a lawsuit filed on behalf of his estate highlighted serious safety oversights by the village.

The circumstances have sparked discussions about the importance of worker safety on construction sites, with ongoing legal proceedings following Heiden’s case.
