Former “American Idol” Contestant Faces Serious Charges
A former contestant from “American Idol,” Randy Madden, has been accused of raping a minor. Surprisingly, he went on to form a band named Sexual Harassment after being eliminated from the show twice.
Madden, 45, auditioned for “American Idol” in 2008 but failed to impress the judges. He attempted to perform Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” but Simon Cowell cut him off swiftly, only about 20 seconds in. The judges suggested he might need a more dramatic approach, humorously implying he should harm himself to get attention, given his background as a cubicle-working sales rep with little experience in music.
Taking their offhand advice, he founded a band, although the choice of name feels unsettling in light of the current accusations. The group was known for heavy metal-infused covers of Elvis Presley and other intense tracks.
Recently, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office arrested Madden on November 3. The charges against him include unlawful sexual intercourse with someone under 18, as well as oral copulation and other serious offenses. Reports also indicate he is accused of sending harmful materials and trying to persuade a witness not to come forward.
Madden is facing six felony counts, and the alleged incidents reportedly took place between July and September of this year, involving more than one sexual encounter. He maintained his innocence by pleading not guilty and was released on $100,000 bail.
Outside the Ventura County Superior Court, he opted not to comment about the serious allegations, though he did seek and was granted a postponement of his next hearing until January 8. Madden, recently injured in a motorcycle accident, was seen using a cane as he made his way into the courthouse.
In the years following his initial audition, Madden has dabbled in various occupations, including hairdressing and photography, with a personal page showcasing images of young women. His attempts to reignite his musical aspirations also led him back to “American Idol” for another chance, but that effort didn’t fare any better.
Reflecting on his journey, he expressed a kind of hopefulness after his initial rejection, saying he believed someone would eventually recognize his talent.
