Transgender Athlete Wins Medals Amid Controversy

AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete, recently clinched two first-place medals at the California State Championships. This achievement has ignited considerable debate, particularly surrounding the participation of transgender athletes in high school sports.

Hernandez, a competitor from Jurupa Valley High School, became a focal point in a larger discussion about trans athletes in California’s track and field scene. This has provoked condemnation, especially given the backdrop of lawsuits involving the Trump administration and the Justice Department.

The Inter-California Governance Federation has adjusted its rules to allow biological females to claim first-place medals if a transgender athlete takes their spot. Hernandez, reflecting on the situation, expressed mixed feelings. “It’s definitely crazy. I get a lot of disliked comments, but I don’t care. I’m a 16-year-old girl with a crazy attitude. Do you think I’m going to care?”

Interestingly, Hernandez initially sought to avoid the spotlight. Before publicly identifying as transgender, Hernandez finished third in the women’s triple jump at the 2024 State Finals, but secured a victory in the same event the following year, along with a win in the high jump.

This ongoing controversy about trans athletes has sparked various protests and discussions. Hernandez, undeterred by criticism, reiterated, “I did what I wanted to do. I was in favor of everything, so that’s what I was really trying to do. All of this backlash, I was just focused on my performance.” It remains uncertain if any significant changes to the current rules will be implemented next season.

In a related context, President Trump signed an executive order earlier this year prohibiting male athletes from participating in women’s sports, a rule that impacts several states, including California. Here, transgender athletes have made a notable mark in high school competitions during the recent sports season.
