Coordinated Activists Incited Disorderly Anti-ICE Protest That Resulted in Gunfire

Migrant Protest in Southern California Involves Gunfire

An organized group of activists has encouraged demonstrators to show up at a chaotic incident in Southern California, where it was reported that shots were fired at federal agents on Thursday, as indicated by a social media post.

Based on an Instagram update, the Ventura County Chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and a local activist group, VC Defensa, praised protesters who confronted immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) as they conducted a search at a cannabis farm in Camarillo, California. The FBI is currently seeking a man who was captured on video allegedly brandishing a handgun while filming an agent. Meanwhile, the Instagram accounts for both organizations have already announced plans for a protest on Friday in the vicinity.

“During today’s legal search, it seems a man fired at law enforcement around 2:26 PM on Laguna Road, near Lasposa,” stated an FBI tweet. “A reward of up to $50,000 is available for information leading to a conviction. Contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI for tips.”

“Now – More Support Needed in Laguna Rd!” reads one post from VC Defensa regarding the incident. The post included footage showing protesters gathering at the farm with a caption saying, “The community enters the field to protect the area from agents.” Another post indicated, “7/10 Camarillo up to Laguna and Lasposa.”

VC Defensa and the PSL’s Ventura County Chapter did not reply to requests for comments.

Moreover, the groups have called for an “emergency mobilization” on Instagram for Friday, urging protesters to assemble at Oxnard City Hall, which is just a short walk from Camarillo. The stated purpose of the protest is to highlight “the injustice and fear that our community has been experiencing due to the terror inflicted by ICE and the National Guard.”

Authorities apprehended dozens during the raid, including minors who are undocumented. Reports suggest that some fired projectiles at the protesters while tear gas was deployed to disperse the crowd. A suspect wanted by the FBI was seen escaping from a gas canister and allegedly firing a shot.

Federal agents reported discovering ten undocumented minor immigrants on the cannabis farm. On Thursday, a spokesperson made a statement addressing the incidents, facing criticism from Democrats who condemned the attacks targeting what they perceived as innocent immigrants, without acknowledging ICE’s role in the discovery.

California has faced a surge of anti-ICE protests recently, with various groups, including the PSL, contributing to rising tensions over local immigration actions and organizing protests in Los Angeles. These protests have led to days of unrest, resulting in hundreds of arrests, fires, vandalism, and the activation of the National Guard.

The FBI has put up a reward of $50,000 for information leading to the conviction of the shooter involved in this incident, which follows two earlier shootings aimed at law enforcement at a federal immigration facility in Texas. ICE has noted an alarming increase in attacks on its agents, registering nearly 700% more incidents.

“The dangerous rhetoric from California politicians fosters attacks on federal agents enforcing immigration laws,” commented Attorney Bill Essay. “Their irresponsible statements seem to encourage violence and heightened tensions, but we will not retreat.”
