After the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump over the weekend, a North Carolina police officer posted on Facebook, “Damn. We’re about an inch away from making America great again…” WNCN-TV reported.
As you can imagine, this post turned out to be a costly miscalculation.
“My attempt at dark humor was completely out of place and in poor taste.”
WNCN reports that Sergeant Brandon Richardson, who has served with the Tarboro Police Department for 24 years, is currently on administrative leave pending the completion of an internal investigation. Tarboro is a city of just over 11,000 people located just over an hour east of Raleigh.
Facebook Police Station post The department said in a statement on Monday that it was “aware of an inappropriate social media posting made by one of our officers. This does not reflect the department’s values or standards and is being taken very seriously.”
The department’s message added that upon learning of the post, officers “took immediate steps to address the situation. An internal investigation has been launched to determine the context and details of the post. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The department has reviewed its social media policies to ensure they are in line with best practices and clearly communicate the department’s expectations.”
WNCN reported that Richardson Apologized His Facebook page contained a post that appears to have been deleted, in which he wrote, in part, “My attempt at dark humor was completely out of place and in poor taste. I now realize that my comments were not only inappropriate, but also deeply hurtful to many of you. For that, I offer my sincerest apologies,” the station reported.
According to WNCN, Richardson’s post added that he took full responsibility and asked people to “keep Trump and his family in their thoughts as he recovers from these physical and emotional wounds.”
WNCN reported that Richardson joined the Tarboro Police Department as a patrol officer in 2000 and was promoted to detective in the department’s investigations division in May 2014.
