Police in Texas reportedly shot and killed a “possible gunman” who may have had a bomb strapped to her chest as she headed to a Houston-area church on Sunday.
The near attack on Joel Osteen’s Lakewood church involved two suspects, at least one of whom was a woman. According to Channel 3 Now.
“Due to the fluid nature of this situation, this information remains preliminary,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement. I wrote in X’s post around 3:30 p.m.
“The possible shooter was found lying on the ground and is believed to have been shot by one of our deputies at the scene,” he said. “I’m on my way to the scene.”
Gonzalez’s representatives responded to the megachurch along the Southwest Expressway shortly after 2 p.m., shortly after Spanish-language services began. According to ABC13.
Witnesses told police they heard gunshots coming from the choir room, causing panic among churchgoers.
“The whole church started praying and proclaiming the name of Jesus,” she said. She said, “I thought, “This may be the last time I’ll be able to praise the name of Jesus and pray, so let’s do this.””
Officials told the media that officers neutralized the female suspect. However, authorities were concerned that a bomb may have been placed in her chest, so they proceeded with the investigation cautiously.
Houston police are asking the public to avoid the area, the department said.
