Corey Comperatore family recalls slain father as ‘girl dad,’ ‘great husband,’ vows to get justice: ‘Blood is on their hands’

Corey Comperatore was a 50-year-old former volunteer fire chief who was killed while trying to protect his family at a fateful Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The family of the slain father gave their first formal interviews since the tragic incident on July 13, when Comperatore was shot and killed during a rally for former President Donald Trump.

Corey and Helen Comperatore were youthful sweethearts who married 29 years ago when they began dating as sophomores in high school.

“I started screaming, but in my mind I kept saying ‘wake up,’ as if this was a dream. Then I realised it wasn’t a dream and I felt like my whole world had ended.”

Recalling the beginning of her romance with Corey, Helen said, “It was Valentine’s Day and Corey turned up at my house with a dozen red roses. I said, ‘Does this mean we’re dating?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, I guess so,’ and I said, ‘OK.'”

The couple married and had two daughters, Allison and Kaylee.

Helen said Corey was a “great man,” a “great husband” and a “great father.”

At age 16, Corey became a volunteer firefighter and worked his way up to become fire chief for the Buffalo Township Fire Department in Pennsylvania.

Family fondly remembered Corey’s love of his two “rambunctious” Doberman Pinschers and bass fishing.

Family members noted how Corey is the best “girl dad.”

Allison said WTAE Television“If I wanted to braid my hair, my dad would braid my hair. When I was doing competitive cheer, he was the cool dad because he could do back handsprings. Once everyone heard about it, soon little girls were begging to do back handsprings on the tumble track.”

According to his family, Corey was excited to meet former President Trump for the first time at the Butler rally.

Corey’s final social media post just hours before his heartbreaking death post “Trump Rally! Butler, PA,” it read.

The would-be assassin who tried to assassinate President Trump fired eight shots at the Butler rally on July 13.

Corey selflessly and instinctively tried to protect his loved ones who were with him at the rally when the assassination attempt on President Trump occurred.

“I was the one who my dad threw me down. As he tried to throw me down he was shot and fell on top of me. I don’t remember hearing any other gunshots. I don’t remember feeling any other gunshots. I was trying to take care of my dad at that moment,” Allison said.

The grieving daughter continued: “When he was on top of me I was just a total mess, I turned around and yelled ‘daddy’ and every time I turned around he was down so I started screaming and quickly tried to stop him bleeding out.”

“I started screaming and in my mind I kept saying ‘wake up’ as if this was a dream. And then I realised it wasn’t a dream and it felt like my whole world had ended,” Kaylee explained.

One of the gunmen’s bullets hit Corey in the head, killing him.

Helen said, “He was absolutely a hero. He saved his wife, he saved his children and he was just the best man. Just the best.”

“He was such a wonderful man and I would ask people not to remember him as the man who was shot at a rally,” Helen said of her slain husband.

The widow of a murdered former fire chief is incredibly grateful for all the support her family has received, but knows it will never bring Corey back to life. But Helen wants to shed light on how her husband was brutally murdered at a political rally.

Helen said: “I do speak to him and all I can say is ‘I’m sorry this happened’ but I know he will want me to get to the bottom of this and I know I will.”

The Comperatore family began trying to understand why Corey was brutally gunned down on what should have been a joyous day.

Helen declared, “I want justice for my husband and I will get it.”

Kaylee believes the security guards at Trump rallies “are running my father’s blood. I hope they wake up every day and think about what they’ve taken from our family.”

The distraught daughter added: “We have to wake up every day and see our dad in our heads and our children shouldn’t have to see that.”

A preliminary investigative report released this week by Rep. Clay Higgins (R-Louisiana), a member of the House Bipartisan Task Force on the Assassination Attempt of President Donald J. Trump, charged that the FBI and Secret Service used questionable judgment leading up to and after last month’s deadly assassination attempt on President Trump.

The FBI later released a statement to The Blaze News denying the allegations.

“Any suggestion that the FBI is obstructing Congress’ efforts to investigate the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, is inaccurate and unfounded,” the FBI’s national press office told The Blaze News. “The FBI worked closely with our law enforcement partners to conduct a thorough investigation of the shooting and followed standard procedures in handling the crime scene and evidence.”

“The FBI continues its thorough investigative work to obtain as complete information as possible about what led to this shooting, and we remain committed to maintaining the utmost transparency as we brief Congress and inform the public on our ongoing investigation.”
