Cornyn Calls for FBI Assistance Amid Legislative Controversy in Texas

Texas Senator John Cornyn is pushing for FBI involvement as tensions rise in the state legislature. Following a decision by some Democrats to leave the state in an effort to halt progress on a new Congressional map, Cornyn reached out to the agency for support.

On Tuesday, he sent a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, asking the agency to take “appropriate measures” to assist law enforcement in locating and apprehending lawmakers who have fled the state. This move has come as Governor Abbott has ordered these absentees to be arrested, asserting they’ve breached their oaths by not participating in a special legislative session.

Many Texas Democrats have relocated to states like Illinois and New York. Cornyn suggested that state authorities may require federal help in tracking down these legislators. Abbott expressed frustration on Monday about the lack of business conducted at the Capitol due to these absences.

“In a typical democracy, we resolve our differences through discussion and votes, rather than running away,” Cornyn remarked, emphasizing the need for collaboration over avoidance.

He noted that working alongside the FBI would help because the federal agency has the resources to support state law enforcement in situations where lawmakers cross state lines. “It’s crucial to investigate those who may be acting unlawfully,” he added.

In Texas, lawmakers can be fined $500 per day for not participating in special sessions. Furthermore, Abbott has initiated an inquiry into whether his acceptance of outside support to cover these fines violates the Bribery Act.

Cornyn expressed concerns regarding the timing of the situation, mentioning the urgency as Abbott has called for a 30-day special session that may affect redistricting ahead of the 2026 elections. While he didn’t delve into specific constituency efforts in his letter, he did reference recent devastating floods in Texas that resulted in significant loss of life.

“These legislators are evading their constitutional responsibilities and may be committing acts that warrant full investigation and accountability,” Cornyn concluded in his letter to Patel. He urged cooperation with Texas officials to ensure the situation is managed effectively.
