On Tuesday night, despite President Donald Trump’s endorsement, Florida lawmaker Corey Mills was unable to secure his third term in the House due to ongoing scandals. Mills faced scrutiny from a House Ethics Committee investigation as well as an alleged federal investigation, which undoubtedly impacted his campaign.
The primary was won by Ryan Elijah, a former news anchor from the Orlando area and ex-NFL sideline reporter. This result is somewhat surprising, especially since Mills had previously led in numerous polls and enjoyed significant backing within Republican circles.
There had been considerable momentum to expel Mills from Congress, and those efforts were ultimately successful. Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) spearheaded a bipartisan attempt to censure Mills and even floated the idea of expulsion, although she later backed away from that. Mace also endorsed Elijah’s campaign for the Florida State Representative seat.
Interestingly, earlier this month, other Republican figures, including Representatives Mike Haridopoulos and Anna Paulina Luna, expressed their support for Elijah, indicating a shift in party dynamics.
Mills, a military veteran, had continually highlighted his ties to Trump during his campaign, trying to brush off the serious allegations that undermined his position. He is among several prominent House Republicans recently caught up in controversies. For instance, Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-N.C.) has stepped back from running for re-election after facing harassment accusations from two young female staffers.
House Democrats are now casting their sights on Mills as a potential weak point for the Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections. It remains to be seen whether they will now shift their focus to Elijah, given his recent victory over Mills.
