Senator Calls for IRS to Revoke Non-Profit Status of Muslim Advocacy Groups

Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, is urging the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to revoke the non-profit status of Muslim advocacy groups he believes are connected to terrorist organizations such as Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

In a recent letter, Cotton referenced the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), stating it was labeled as an unprosecuted co-conspirator in the notorious Holy Land Foundation (HLF) terrorist financing case, which involved significant funding to Hamas—around $12.4 million, according to the Justice Department.

He emphasized that the IRS has the authority to ensure that an organization’s operations align with the purpose for which they received tax-exempt status. “Tax-exempt status is a privilege, not a right, and should not subsidize an organization that has connections to terrorism,” Cotton noted.

Meanwhile, CAIR has pushed back against Cotton’s claims, dismissing them as rooted in a debunked conspiracy theory and likening the senator’s actions to those from the McCarthy era.

CAIR asserts that it is a legitimate American civil rights organization focused on countering anti-Muslim prejudice and defending the Constitution. They have been involved in various advocacy efforts for over three decades.

Notably, Nihad Awad, CAIR’s executive director, faced backlash for comments made after the events on October 7, where he seemingly endorsed the actions of Palestinians during that period, leading to further scrutiny from the Biden administration.

The statement regarding his reaction to the violence drew condemnation, with the administration labeling it a “shocking, anti-Semitic statement.” Criticism has also come from organizations like the Anti-Defamation League, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding CAIR’s position in the wake of rising anti-Semitic violence in America.
