Could Vice President Kamala Harris make a run for California governor in 2 years?

Nearly half of voters in Vice President Kamala Harris' home state of California say they would be willing to support her if she decides to run for governor in two years.

A poll from the University of California, Berkeley's Institute of Government, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times found that 46% of registered voters in the Golden State say they are very likely or somewhat likely to support Harris for governor. I answered.

The poll, released Wednesday, was conducted Oct. 22-29, before former President Donald Trump won the electoral college and the popular vote against Harris for the White House.

The race to succeed Newsom, who is at the helm of the nation's most populous state, is expected to attract national attention. Harris, who lives in California, served as San Francisco district attorney and state attorney general, and was elected to represent her home state in the U.S. Senate in 2016.

The vice president and Democratic presidential nominee easily won California's 54 electoral votes in last week's election, with nearly 87% of votes counted in her home state, giving her a more than 20-point lead over Trump.

After replacing President Biden on the Democratic 2024 ticket in July, Harris was repeatedly criticized by Trump, who blamed the vice president for the crime, high prices and other ills facing California. . He also repeatedly claimed that Harris and her policies contributed to San Francisco's ruin.

Last month, President Trump held a large rally in California, a state that has not voted Republican in presidential elections in more than 35 years.

There has been much speculation about what Harris will do when she leaves office in two months, but the vice president has not publicly discussed potential future plans.

California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, a longtime ally of Ms. Harris, is already running to replace Mr. Newsom. Kounalakis announced his candidacy for governor in 2026 more than a year ago.
