County executive known for strong MAGA support enters governor's race in New York

Bruce Blakeman Announces Run for New York Governor in 2026

Despite some setbacks in last month’s elections, a notable Republican has decided to enter the gubernatorial race in New York. On Tuesday, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman confirmed his candidacy for governor in 2026, intending to challenge the current Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul.

“I’m set to take on Kathy Hochul and advocate for my family,” Blakeman stated. He added, “It’s official. I’m running for Governor of New York. Our state is burdened with high taxes, increasing utility bills, and crime rates. New Yorkers deserve a proven leader who will prioritize their needs.”

Blakeman emphasized the necessity for effective leadership: “New York needs leadership that works. I am ready to take over for Kathy Hochul and fight for my family,” he reiterated.

Kathy Hochul’s team responded with a mix of skepticism and criticism. “Bruce Blakeman is just another MAGA supporter who aims to carry out Donald Trump’s agenda in New York,” Hochul remarked on her social media. “He won’t succeed on my watch.” In another jab, her team labeled him “Bootslicker Blakeman,” claiming he’s aligned with Trump’s costly tariffs while not genuinely committed to New York’s fight.

Meanwhile, Representative Elise Stefanik has also declared her candidacy, which sets the stage for a GOP primary showdown. According to reports, polls indicate that Stefanik holds a significant lead—70%—over Blakeman, particularly in Long Island.

Trump, who has praised both candidates for their contributions in New York, has yet to publicly endorse anyone, leaving their futures uncertain. Blakeman, in a recent interview, indicated he believes the president doesn’t need to make a decision just yet: “Let’s see what happens.”
